Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall in DC
The Korean War Veterans Memorial is located on the National Mall, and honors the members of the United States Armed Forces who served in the Korean War particular those who were killed in action, taken prisoner, or are still missing. Located near the Lincoln Memorial and just across from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial consists of several different statues and monuments. There are 19 statues depicting men on patrol with a variety of ethnic backgrounds who represent the Army, Marines, Navy, and Airforce all working together. There is also a mural wall which is over 164 feet long and consists of 2,400 photographic images depicting the servicemen, nurses, chaplains, other support personnel and their equipment during the war. Three beds of Rose of Sharon hibiscus plants add beauty to the landscape and a Pool of Remembrance honors the dead, missing, or those wounded from U.S. and U.N. forces. You can walk out into the pool area on a peninsula which is symbolic of the Republic of Korea. An Honor Roll also exists which consists of every verifiable name of those who were killed, captured, or area still missing. The Korean War Veterans Memorial is open daily from 8am until midnight and pays tribute to those who fought in the Korean War, and its Mural reminds us that "Freedom Is Not Free".
