Located at Pine Street in Seaford, the Governor Ross Mansion and Plantation is a unique eyelet into the littler known facets of the Civil War and one of the most noteworthy residents of Delaware, who was also a slave-owner.<
The Ross Mansion stands as an exquisite remnant of pre-Civil War Delaware in all its Victorian splendor, while also bringing to light one of its darker facets... authentic, and painstakingly restored slave quarters. The Mansion is designed in the likeness of an opulent Italian Villa, right down to its ornate ceilings and beautiful furnishings. The Ross estate is also home to a granary which is furbished with exhibits of farm equipment, a smokehouse, stables and corncribs, while also the picturesque Honeymoon Cottage, which was purchased off a catalogue and embedded into the scenic grounds of the manor. The Manor, which was built in 1859, as home to the reputed Delaware Governor William H. H. Ross, has indeed traveled a long way through the annals of time.
The Seaford History Society, which currently maintains the Governor Ross Mansion, also organizes enactments of the Civil War, complete with costumed actors, fairs, musical events and also tea-parties. Christmas sees the manor adorned in all its festive glory, with the History Society also hosting an array of special events. You can even rent the venue for your private events for a truly, one-of-a-kind experience.
