The site of the largest battle ever waged during the Civil War was in Gettysburg, PA. This was the bloodiest single battle of the war resulting in over 51,000 soldiers killed, wounded, missing, or captured. Referred to as a major turning point in the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg successfully ended the second invasion of the North by General Robert E. Lee and his "Army o f Northern Virginia," and resulted in a monumental victory for the Union.
Gettysburg National Military Park has been dedicated to the many soldiers that fought in the American Civil War and many efforts have been made to preserve small portions of the battlefield as a memorial. The National Park spans over 6,000 acres and has 265 miles of park roads and over 1,400 monuments, markers, and memorials on the land.
