Step back into the world of the Civil War with a visit to the Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site, the capital-area's best preserved Union fort. At the museum, you'll enjoy exhibits including The Common Soldier, which features the equipment of the typical Union foot soldier; The Art of the Artilleryman, which includes tools and artifacts relating to the preparation and firing of a cannon; and Medical Care for the Civil War Soldier.
At the fort itself, you'll see the gate featuring cannonballs and other decorative and ceremonial symbols, as well as the reconstructed Officers' Hut where high-ranking officers lived. The restored Northwest Bastion offers a glimpse of how the fort looked during the mighty war with a cannon, powder magazine, and ammunition filling room. More than 250 troops from reenactment units from all along the reaches of the Atlantic Coast will converge on Fort Ward Park for the Revolutionary War Reenactment as part of the Washington Birthday Celebration.
