This national park offers still-standing reminders of the canal that followed 184.5 miles of the Potomac River from Washington, DC to Cumberland, MD from 1828- until 1924. Original structures, including locks, lockhouses, aqueducts and more serve as reminders of the canal's former role in the area.
Each year, millions of visitors make modern use of the sprawling park with hiking, biking and other recreational activities. Scenic overlooks of the Great Falls of the Potomac are also popular visitor destinations, as well as special mule-drawn canal boat rides at Georgetown and Great Falls. Canoeing is also permitted on certain areas of the river in the park.
