Bridgeville Historical Society Museum near Washington, DC, which is located in
Bridgeville, Delaware, is on the Registry for National Historic Places, and you'll understand why when you visit.
Originally, it was built in 1911 as a firehouse and in 1924 renovated into classrooms for the local school. It was only used in this capacity for a few years until it was turned into an apartment. A few citizens of the Bridgeville area became interested in conserving the history of the community and founded the Bridgeville Historical Society in 1976. The society also purchased the adjoining property and made a community park for activities in the area. The park was also made with a bandstand for the many concerts that are held in Bridgeville.
Some of the displays that can be found are old photographs and records, maps, pamphlets and books and newspapers to name a few. You will also find a general history on the community going back to 1900. They have a Culver post card collection as well as a 452-piece doll collection that was left to the school district by Anna Dickerson Brewington Peters almost half a century ago. Although it is owned by the school district, it is kept at the Bridgeville Historical Society Museum.
The majority of the funds to run the museum come from fundraisers, their annual summer auction and donations by individuals and businesses. Their December craft show, "Christmas in Bridgeville" is usually their main fundraiser. The Bridgeville Historical Society Museum is available to the public by appointment. There is also a book, published in 1985, about the area called, "Bridgeville-A Community History of the Nineteenth Century". If you have any questions, you can contact President, Milton Marozowich. He'll be happy to help you.
