The Arlington House was where Robert E. Lee and his family called home for thirty years, and where he made his historic decision to resign from the US Army. This house was not only home to the Lee's, but it also stands as a memorial to George Washington. George Washington Parke Custis, Lee's father-in-law, built the house between 1802 and 1818 to be his home as well as a memorial to George Washington, his step-grandfather.
Robert E. Lee wrote his letter of resignation that was to be sent to the US Army in the second floor bedchamber of this historic home. The slave quarters and gardens are now preserved in his memory, because of his notable courage and because of the way he demanded the respect of Americans in both the North and South and used his influence to help heal the nation after the Civil War.
