Explore the more than 3,200 acres of Antietam National Battlefield, site of the of the legendary Battle of Antietam in 1862. This battle marked the end of General Robert E. Lee's first Northern invasion with a September 17, 1862 Southern defeat in which more than 23,000 soldiers from both sides of the battle were left dead, wounded or missing. The battle also led to the Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Lincoln.
