The African American Civil War Memorial Freedom Foundation & Museum tells the largely unknown story of African American soldiers during the Civil War and their struggle for freedom.
The museum features photographs, historic documents, and state of the art audio & visual equipment. In addition to all the artifacts on display, the museum also offers educational and research tools. A descendents registry is available for family members who have relatives that served with the United States Colored Troops. This also aids in helping those who are researching their family tree. There is also a searchable database where you can identify a certain solider and learn about their regimental history, and other information.
A few blocks from the museum is the Spirit of Freedom Statue. The statue stands tall in the center of a granite plaza encircled on three sides by the wall of honor. The ten foot tall statue features African American uniformed soldiers along with a sailor ready to leave home.
The African American Civil War Memoiral Freedom Foundation & Museum along with the Spirit of Freedom Statue honor the history and sacrifices made by African Americans soldiers during the Civil war as they fought for freedom.
