Abraham Lincoln, referred to by many as the nation's greatest president worked extremely hard to preserve our great nation by saving the union and freeing slaves. On April 15, 1865 the great president was shot on by John Wilkes Booth. In response to the nation's great devastation, The Lincoln Memorial was built. Dedicated on May 30, 1922, the memorial built to resemble a greek temple with 36 columns representing each state at the time of his death. To this day, The Lincoln Memorial is one of the most profound symbols of American Democracy in the world, and is one of the most visited sites in Washington DC.
