Memorial Illumination at Antietam National Battlefield at Sharpsburg, MD
Visit Antietam National Battlefield during its most somber yet beautiful event with the Memorial Illumination drive-through experience. More than 23,000 candles will be lit and lined up along the battlefield to pay tribute to the soldiers who were killed, wounded, or reported missing at the noteworthy Battle of Antietam. A five-mile drive through battlefield will reveal rows of candles to help put the huge loss of life and limb that resulted from this bloody battle.
In the event of poor weather, the Illumination will be rescheduled for December 10. Event brochures will be handed out at the entrance to help detail more information about the battle and the history of the Illumination. This truly is one of the most stirring event to take place at the battlefield and is an experience the entire family will never forget!

Extraordinarily movingYou may line up and wait in your car for hours before proceding single file, bumper to bumper in the gathering darkness through the paved drives of Antietam Battlefield. As far as the eye can see, candles flicker in protective bags--one for each fallen soldier. The candles have been lovingly lit by hundreds of volunteers who are also paying tribute to the historic battle which was fought on this ground hallowed by blood spilled by thousands of brave soldiers. Field after field of candles greet your eyes at each rise and turn of the route. Come with close friends, for you will weep in silence as you experience this simple, extraordinarily moving commemoration of this Civil War battle.
