First Night Alexandria at Old Town Alexandria near Washington, DC

Alexandria is well known as a cultural hub of Virginia. Separated from Washington, DC. by the Potomac River, Alexandria seems like a living piece of history, complete with cobblestone streets and colonial brick buildings. Located right on the banks of the Potomac River is Old Town, which is devoted to the preservation of historical landmarks and houses a variety of boutiques and art galleries. Tourists are able to easily navigate the area by taking the trolley, a free mode of transportation.
Since 1994, Old Town has been hosting the infamous First Night Alexandria, a family oriented, and alcohol-free, New Year's Eve celebration. This event takes place all over Old Town, as nearly every business is transformed into a venue for performing artists. First Night begins on the morning of January 31st, featuring an assortment of children's activities, and ends with a spectacular fireworks display to ring in the New Year. Tickets can be purchased online a few months in advance, but it's best to book your hotel room early because nearly half of the participants are visiting from out-of-town.
