The nation mourned as John F. Kennedy, the youngest president ever, was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on Nov. 25, 1963, his term cut short by an assassin's bullet. During the funeral, Mrs. Kennedy lit The Eternal Flame, which burns from the center of a five-foot circular flat-granite stone at the head of the grave, to commemorate the great president. The Eternal Flame remains to this day to be one of the most visited locations in Arlington.
