Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address at Gettysburg National Park near Washington, DC
Every November, Gettysburg National Park in Pennsylvania holds an event honoring the anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Gettysburg Address. This speech, which started with the famous words "Four score and seven years ago," is one of America's most quoted and well-known presidential speeches. Lincoln's address opened up a new chapter in US history that was devoted to making all people equal. The speech also happened at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery, which is where the annual event is held.
The annual observation starts with a wreath-laying ceremony and a morning memorial service at the Soldiers' National Cemetery that honors all the men and women who gave their lives while fighting in a US war. The memorial is followed by a graveside salute dedicated to African-American US troops. All events during this day are free of charge. The event may be held at an alternate location if the weather is bad.
