Giant Pandas, Giraffes, and More at Washington, DC's National Zoo

Every member of the family will come away with something new after a visit to the National Zoo — one of Washington, DC's most astounding attractions.

About the Zoo

  • Frederick Law Olmstead designed the National Zoo after its creation by Congress in 1889 to study, celebrate and protect animals and their habitats. Its roughly 2,700 inhabitants include about 500 species living on 163 wooded acres of land. The park is located in northwest Washington D.C.

Mei Xiang & Tian Tian - Famous Giant Pandas

  • The National Zoo's most famous residents are Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, two giant Chinese pandas. Other inhabitants come from across the world and as close as your own backyard. They come in all shapes and sizes, from exotic ant species to the tallest giraffes and playful orangutans. The zoo is also a refuge for many rare or endangered species.
  • And it's not just about the animals. A multitude of plant species and other natural elements also surround you. Be sure to catch some of the zoo's captivating educational programs during your visit. Daily happenings include animal training, feeding demonstrations and presentations by animal keepers.

Visiting the Zoo

  • Enjoy refreshments like ice cream and bring home a few souvenirs from the many gift shops and bookstore along the way. Strollers are available for rental, and there are snack stops located throughout the park, or you can bring your own picnic. Grills and other cooking devices are not permitted.
  • The zoo is open every day of the year except December 25. There is no admission charge.

Come to the National Zoo and learn about animals and habitats from around the world — with only one stop!
