Wanting the Crazy horse Memorial to be more than just a mountain carving, the artist decided to start a collection of outstanding examples of Indian culture and heritage, to be displayed as an educational tool to increase the knowledge of our Native American history for today and the future. This exemplary collection is displayed at the Indian Museum of North America and represents all North American Tribes.
Each year tribal members (and others) donate Native American artifacts and art, constantly expanding the collection. As of July 2005, the museum has collected 63 tribal flags. These flags represent each tribes diversity and individuality and that of the native American heritage and culture. Receiving one of these flags is considered to be one of the highest honors bestowed by Native Americans, and these flags are proudly displayed at The Indian Museum of North America.
The Native American Cultural Center and the Indian Museum is a highly popular attraction to South Dakota visitors, as it offers many exhibits, Native American Artists and artwork, and a hands-on recreational area for the children.
