Famous ghosts, beautiful pines, and gentle slopes-come take a walk on the George S. Mickelson Trail to experience all this, plus the serenic beauty of the Black Hills of South Dakota.
The trail traces the historic Burlington Northern Railroad Line from Deadwood to Edgemont. Abandoned from 1983 to 1989, the trail was resurrected by a group of locals, who understood the value of its rich history and recreational potential of the trail.
Mickelson Trail is easily accessible, making it possible for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy. It was rated one of the best of the midwest, and is well-known for its annual Mickelson Trail Trek 3-day bike ride. Bicyclists from all over the country come to take part in the event, which spans throughout the Black Hills area ending in Deadwood.
Completed in 1998 as part of the rails-to-rails projects, it winds through the center of the Black Hills from Edgemont to Lead/Deadwood, and is great for horseback riding as well as bicycling. It has even been rumored that the ghosts of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane still hover and haunt the trail!
