Once you've seen Mount Rushmore, it's time to see Beautiful Rushmore Cave in Keystone, South Dakota, located just 11 miles south of Rapid City. This gorgeous cave was discovered by adventurous gold miners in 1876. When walking through this cave, be sure to look on the cave walls, some of these pioneers have carved their initials into the stone. Visitors can escape from scorching summer heat into this comfortable 58 degree haven, located beneath the surface.
The interior of the cave is well-lit, so guests don't have to strain to see. Tour guides are friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to guide you through this natural wonder full of imbedded fossils and thousands of fascinating cave formations. Even on the busiest of days, you'll never have to wait long for the next tour. Be sure to visit the air-conditioned gift shop before you leave. Tours last approximately 1 hour. This attraction is not free, but the fee is minimal. In June, July, and August they are open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. In May, September, and October, they are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
