Mount Rushmore Tour

The Crazy Horse Memorial is one of the most popular attractions in the Mount Rushmore area. This massive undertaking has been in progress since 1948 and is still far from completion today, making it the longest undertaking of its kind in the country. The memorial consists of the mountain carving, the Indian Museum of North America, and the Native American Cultural Center, all of which serve to honor the memory and spirit of Crazy Horse, the great Oglala Lakota warrior.

The statue is currently being carved into a mountain, and will stand at 641 feet wide and 563 feet high. When completed, the statue will be larger than Mount Rushmore, where each of the four US Presidents' heads stand 60 feet high. The face of the statue was just completed in 1948, and Crazy Horse's outstretched arm as well as his horse are still works in progress. Occasionally, construction of the memorial dictates the need for blasting on the mountain. During these times, large blasting parties are hosted that draw in hundreds of visitors to watch the massive and well-planned blast.

Mount Rushmore Tour
Our tour was great, the driver (Randy) was so informative about the area and we learned far more about the area than if we had driven ourselves. Our lunch was a wonderful A-Z salad bar type somewhere between the Crazy Horse Museum and Mt Rushmore. Very enjoyable day.
