If you are intending on planning a trip to Mt Rushmore, sightseeing probably tops your list of "things to do." There are plenty of places to stay around the area and plenty of activities.

Here are some sights you won't want to miss in the Mount Rushmore greater area:

For Everyone...

Of course, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. And learn the story behind the statue by perusing the Borglum Historical Center.

Crazy Horse Memorial in Custer will be the largest carved monument in the world once it's complete. This dedication to the Native American people that made the Black Hills their sacred lands is a must-see.

Harney Peak is the highest elevation east of the Rockies.

If You Like Cowboys, Indians, or Outlaws...

The City of Deadwood was home to Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. The entire town is a national historic site. And you can still play a hand of poker in a Wild West Saloon.

One of the most famed and recognizable spots in Rapid City is The Circle B Ranch. Visiting the Circle B is like going back in time to the Old West. Take a trail ride through the forest in an antique covered wagon or ride a horse like the cowboys of yesteryear. You can pan for your own gold and play horse shoes or a round of mini golf. Watch a shoot-out and then enjoy dinner in the 1,300-seat Chuck Wagon Barn where dinner is served on tin plates and tin cups. After dinner you can enjoy the music and comedy show of the Circle B Cowboys.

For Couples...

Hot Springs is also a tremendous destination. There you will find activities such as golfing, fishing, hiking and biking. The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary is located here as is an 1880's jailhouse.

And don't forget Sturgis!

This normally conservative town offers fine dining and shopping until it's time for the Sturgis motorcycle rally. Every year, at the start of August, bikers from all over the world come to participate in this world-famous bike rally. If you are visiting the area in August, this is a scene you won't want to miss.
