Rapid City, SD: City of Presidential & Family AttractionsWalk along the streets of downtown Rapid City and you'll find yourself in the company of American presidents. In a city that prides itself on its preservation of history, the latest Rapid City project, "City of Presidents," combines art and patriotism to create an appealing bonus to a stroll through downtown. Rapid City Presidential Statues Since more than two million people visit Mount Rushmore every year, it seems a natural progression for nearby Rapid City to include life-sized bronze sculptures of the American presidents along its downtown sidewalks. Not only does it keep with the presidential theme, but the sculptures, created by local artists, allow for an up-close photo opportunity while showcasing the talents of South Dakota's artist community. The ten-year project was begun in 2000, and presidents already on the streets include George Washington, John Adams, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon. General Rapid City Attractions Not only will you discover the presidents as you walk along the streets of Rapid City, you'll also find the appealing architecture of renovated and restored buildings, like the Alex Johnson Hotel (it's on the National Register of Historic Landmarks.) You'll find great gift shops and antique stores, ice cream shops and restaurants that cater to all appetites. You'll discover museums that allow you to explore 2.5 billion years of South Dakota history (The Journey Museum), as well as extraordinary artwork (The Dahl Fine Arts Center.) Of course, the Circle B Ranch and their Chuckwagon Dinner Shows are in Rapid City (although not downtown.) So is Bear Country USA and Reptile Gardens. And Rapid City is home to the closest airport to Mount Rushmore. So while Rapid City's "City of Presidents" project is another reason to schedule Rapid City into your Mount Rushmore vacation plans, it's certainly not the only reason! |

Hotel Alex Johnson - Rapid City
We just stayed at the Alex Johnson Hotel and LOVED it! The rooms are clean, the decor unique and the history very interesting. The Landmark Restaurant did a wonderful job with our dinner and the food was very tasty!
Can't wait to go visit again.
-Betty Hopkins, Salem, OH Chuckwagon Dinner and Western Music Show at Circle B Ranch - Rapid City
On the whole, we mainly enjoyed ourselves, and the staff are very accommodating and nice. But it could have been a much nicer experience. We went horseback riding- which cost extra- and the kids did target shooting - which cost extra. But altho it is advertised as having activities before dinner, there is really not much to do until the gunfight. Their petting zoo, for example, had 2 little goats. The chuckwagon experience and singing is very nice and also well organized, but there is too much time between them, which made the children bored and restless. My suggestions for them would be to step up the other activities prior to dinner and show, and also to decrease the time between dinner and the show.
-Nancy Brown, Austin, TX Chuckwagon Dinner and Western Music Show at Circle B Ranch - Rapid City
Anyone with children should go here. Lots to do in addition to dinner and show--mini-golf, lasso-ing, a gunfight in the street. We went childless and still had a blast. Watching the kids chase this bandit was priceless. The show/music was good and the family hosting and everyone involved were very nice.
