Biking Trails in South Dakota

For those who enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Mount Rushmore, yet also want to enjoy a leisurely activity, be sure to pack your biking equipment and visit one of many South Dakota Biking Trails. Various bike trails are available for all types of bike rides including serious road rides, leisurely rides on old railroad beds, strenuous mountain climbs, and fun fat-tire outings.

George S. Mickelson Trail

This fascinating and pictureque trail, known for its cliffs and forests, stretches the length of the Black Hills. This fat tire ride trail is known as the primary trail within the South Dakota park system. For those traveling in groups, the Mickelson trails is set on a wide parth with crushed limestone. For a little bit of a challenge, you will encounter some tunnels and bridges along the way.

State Park Trails

A majority of South Dakota State Parks have an abundance of trails. Hikers take advantage of these trails along with bikers, so be prepared. Some of the most popular trails include Sica Hollow and Newton Hills. Sica Hollow, a 15 mile trail, is known for its steep trails, ravines, and some prarie land. Newton Hill, a six mile trail, offers thick forest and grassland trails.

Black Hills National Forest Trails

The trails in Black Hills National Forest, a nearly 1.2 million acre forest, is crafted for the more advanced biker. The rugged trails known as "The Hills" are landscaped with dirt, grass, rocks and water. You will be challenged with steep climbs and some intrepid descents. Crow Peak, located near Spearfish, covers approximately 1,600 feet in just three and a half miles.

Yankton Biking Trail

For a more leisurely and serene scenic ride overlooking the Missouri River, Yankton Biking Trail is the place to be. Approximately 10 miles between Lewis and Clark Recreation Area and Yankton, trails ride along the coastline of the missouri river as well as some open fields and residential areas. For those seeking a different route, West Side Park in Yankton skips the majority of the residential areas.

Sioux Falls Greenway and Spearfish Canyon

Sioux Falls Greenway is a 14 mile more scenic and leisurely route. Prepare yourself for a spectaculer view of the falls of the Big Sioux River. Spearfish Canyon, a 19 mile trail with translucent limestone cliffs winds through Spearfish Canyon.

Once you have had your share of Mount Rushmore sight-seeing, be sure to experience Mount Rushmores astonishing views from another perspective, yet still enjoy recreational activities.
