Formerly known as the Dallas Museum of Natural History and the Science Place, the Museum of Nature and Science was established in 1936 with the aim of inculcating a scientific outlook, while also spreading awareness about the latest accomplishments in the arena of science and natural history.
Here, you can browse through the eclectic array of permanent exhibits, which range from pre-historic fossils from the Ice Age to the Dental Gallery, which introduces young minds to the intricacies of dental health. Many of the exhibits, like the Ancient Microworlds display combines applied science with fine art to bring to light exquisite images of fossils, magnified to over 30 times their original size. Others, like the Lagoon Nature Walk let visitors interact with the plant and animal kingdom on an intimate level, thus allowing for a superb blend of education and entertainment.
The museum is also home to several collections depicting the plant and animal kingdom of which, the 6,600 specimen-strong bird collection is touted to be the second-largest in Texas. Nature enthusiasts and researchers can also avail of the vast body of information contained in the 4,000 ornithology-related volumes that the Mudge Library is home to. Young minds will undoubtedly revel in the numerous educational programs that the Museum of Nature and Science allows them, which combine hands-on exhibits, planetarium shows and educational classes with their school curriculum.
The Planetarium at the Museum of Nature and Science introduces visitors to astral activities by way of Live Sky Shows and Cosmic Safaris, while also journeying back to Ancient Egypt with the Stars of the Pharaohs program. You can also register as a member of the Museum of Nature and Science to avail of free admission, discounted rental rates and invites to several member-only events.
The Museum welcomes visitors from 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 pm on Sunday. Admission to the museum is charged at about $8.75 per person, while planetarium tickets are priced at about $4.
