Established in 1909, the Forth Worth Zoo first started out with just a handful of animals which included only one lion, two bear cubs and a few rabbits. Ninety-nine years later, the zoo has gone on to become a nationally-ranked family attraction and holds the reputation of being the oldest zoo in Texas.
Today, the zoo boasts of nearly 5,000 inhabitants who are housed in 15 meticulously crafted environs to allow visitors the inimitable opportunity of viewing these animals at ease in their naturally occurring habitats. At the World of Primates, which includes both an indoor and an outdoor facility, you can view gorillas, orangutans, mandrills and gibbons while the African Savannah introduces you to African natives like white rhinos, black rhinos, giraffes and ostriches.
Your little ones can gain their first intimate experience with their barnyard friends at the Petting Coral, or even dress up as their favorite animal at the Playbarn. While here, don't forget to cruise away on an Appaloosa or a Paint horse at the Country Carousel and even catch a short film on living 'wild' in Texas at the Lone Star Mining Company Movie House.
The Fort Worth Zoo also conducts a number of educational events and programs, which include the Weekday Edventure School where young minds can learn about wildlife and animals in conjunction with developing their social, cognitive and language skills in 3-hour classes. You can also participate in the Adult Volunteer Program which lets you voice your support for the zoo's noble cause and lend a hand with to the zoo's expert staff, while also availing of numerous benefits like behind-the-scenes tours and zoo passes.
