The Interurban Railway museum is located right in the heart of Plano, about five blocks east of the intersection of US 75 and 15th Street. It is located in a building that was once the main stop for the Texas Electric Railway. The Texas Electric Railway ran from Denison to Dallas from 1908 to December 31, 1948.
The Texas Electric Railway Station brought people goods, newspaper, traveling salesmen and an assortment of other products and services they would not have otherwise had. Mail was carried and delivered to many towns that the railway ran through due to a 1914 contract signed with the United States Post Office.
Once the contract was signed, three of the interurban cars were remodeled to include sorting tables, mail slots, and cancellation stamps. Two postal employees processed the mail, from a secure rear compartment, as the car traveled daily through the towns on its route.
From 1948 to 1990 the station remained closed. Then it was completely renovated and restored and converted into the museum that it is today. Besides artifacts associated with the Interurban Line, the museum also tells and shows visitors a great deal of information regarding the history of Plano.
Admittance to the museum is free. It's open Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
