Named after Steven Mather, who was the director of the National Park Service when the Grand Canyon became a part of the park system in 1919, Mather Point offers spectacular views of the Grand Canyon from the South Rim.
Located at an elevation of 7,120 feet above sea level, visitors can view the Pipe Creek Canyon and the Inner Gorge from this spot. The Mather Point is housed in the Grand Canyon Village and also offers plenty of camping opportunities to outdoor enthusiasts. You can avail of well maintained camping grounds with facilities like showers at the cost of $1.75 for 5 minutes, adequate restrooms and outdoor sinks. The camping site is also well shaded, as opposed to any of the numerous spots in this region. You can avail of the free Grand Canyon Shuttles to transport you to this point.
