The second overlook on the west rim drive along the Grand Canyon, Maricopa Point stands at about 7,050 feet above sea-level. This spot is well known for its spectacular 180 degree view of the canyon and the picturesque Colorado River which flows through it.
The brilliant sunshine, which filters into the point, makes the beautiful colors of the Canyon's layered walls even more prominent. From here, you can also see the Bright Angel Trail that winds down to the Plateau Point, 2,400 feet below. Here, the canyon edge is quite narrow for about 100 feet before it drops away sharply into a thinner ridge between Horn Creek and the Garden Creek. Towards the west, you will find the remains of the Orphan Mines which were used for their copper reserves in the first phase of the 20th century. The mines were later used for silver and vanadium until the discovery of the abundant uranium ore which was found here in 1956. However, the mining was later discontinued for fear of radioactive residues and the trails which lead towards these mines have now been diverted around them. You can still find the winch engine and several abandoned buildings here.
Inn 1976, this point was also host to the world's first foot launched hand-gliding flight into the Canyon. You can drive to the Maricopa Spot or avail of the shuttle service in the summer months.
If you're looking to experience the Grand Canyon in all its glory, then the Maricopa Point is one spot you simply cannot afford to miss.
