Opened in 1933, the Desert View Watchtower is one exceptional sight to see while visiting the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The watchtower has an ancient look, although it was designed and built between 1930-1933 by perfectionist architect Mary Colter. The tower was designed to mimic an Anasazi watchtower, but is considerably larger.
Mary Colter handpicked nearly every stone that was placed in the tower, including all fine details. Size and appearance were very important to her, as she wanted the tower to have a very weathered appearance.
