Located just 23 miles away from the Grand Canyon Lodge, Cape Royal affords one of the most scenic views of the Grand Canyon to visitors to the region.
You can begin at the parking lot, on a short paved walk which is suitable for visitors of every age and level of fitness. This path leads on to a variety of viewpoints which then takes you to the spectacular southernmost viewpoint on the North Rim — Cape Royal. From here, you can view the Grand Canyon in all its magnificence, while also the sparkling waters of the Colorado River which flows right through it. A major highlight of your visit to Cape Royal is bound to be the stunning Angel's Window. This is a giant hole created on account of the erosion of the limestone rock which forms the walls of the canyon. Over the course of time, this hole has lead to a bridge-like formation that resembles a window with a breathtaking view, thus earning it the name Angel's Window.
Towards the south, you can also view a tall rocky summit which is called Vishnu's Temple, and the south-east offers you the glorious Unkar Wash, which is a part of the Colorado River itself. You can also spot the San Francisco Peaks and the shimmering Clear Creek from yet another viewpoint towards the south. The trail which amounts to just over a mile of paved walkway is also dotted with signs to inform you about the variety of wildlife and vegetation you can find here. One of the few trails which are completely wheelchair accessible, it is also advisable that you carry along plenty of drinking water, as the trail does not offer any points where you can buy some on the way.
You can also carry along a basket to the designated picnic area near the parking lot, which is also equipped with well-maintained restrooms. You visit to Cape Royal will also lead you to the historic Anasazi Dwelling, much of which has been painstakingly preserved.
