National Public Lands Day at Petrified National Forest near the Grand Canyon, AZ

This park comes as a surprise to those expecting the trees to still be standing upright, but there is so much here to see and appreciate. The park is adjacent to the Painted Desert, and features various viewpoints including the Blue Mesa, where the soils are delicate, and there are many logs around partially submerged in the blue-grey mounds of clay. Jasper Forest is a large expanse of logs scattered over a wide and rather desolate valley. Crystal Forest is further south, and at one timehere you'll find beautiful logs which had crevices containing clear quartz and purple amethyst crystals, but all the best specimens were removed by souvenir hunters long ago.
