The Art Gallery of Golden is a tribute from the
Kicking Horse Culture to the historic city of Golden. Home to the exhibit of adventurers and settlers, the gallery provides an innovative way of presenting the different times and events Golden has witnessed over the years.
The Exhibit of Adventurers and Settlers consists of 20 portrait images, each of which depict a family that settled in Golden before the 1920s and has stayed on till date. The background of each of these portraits represents a Golden that has been long lost to the annals of time. Some of the pictures, for example, feature a background image that holds a special significance to the family. Others depict a unique moment that was experienced a long time ago by someone who lived there, in that time period. The exhibition has been created by Colleen Palumbo, Willliam Pitcher and Bill Usher. Each of the photographs have been handpicked by them after reviewing a number of old negatives, prints and glass plates and then restoring those images that could withstand the magnification needed in order to convert the portrait into a large scale format.
The exhibition is focussed on the families whose presence made a significant impact to the history that Golden was to form. You will find portraits of Chinese families that settled in this area in the mid 1880s besides several Sikh families that arrived here in in the late 1950s. If you have a photograph you'd like to share or some information about the current exhibits, the gallery is most willing to lend you a ear. You can also enroll in a watercolor workshop held by Janis Herbison where you can complete your very own painting in a one-day class.
The Art Gallery of Golden is open from 3 pm to 6 pm on Thursdays and Fridays and between 12 pm and 5 pm on Saturdays. For further information and to view their online gallery, you can refer to the website at http://www.kickinghorseculture.ca . For any inquiries, you can also call (250) 344-6186.
