Weaving a Life is generally a name given to the cottage weaver's industry in Gatlinburg for their opening reception. This opening reception was help at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts located in Gatlinburg TN. The Arrowmont is actually a visual arts complex in the Sevier County that grew from the arts curriculum of PI Beta Phi Settlement School. The students and the community at the school were generally taught handicraft skills while also seeking to revitalize traditional crafts among the people of the mountains. Through an active furniture, weaving and basketry program started the fraternity of women marketed the handmaids' to its national membership so that it stimulated the local economy.
During the year 1926 the school started in the Arrow Craft shop which marked the products to be highly in demand in the tourism industry. As the instructions, materials and the ideas were derived from outside of local residents and Appalachia which was included in the crafted items in their own unique way has resulted in excellent and finished products to gain high popularity. However during the year 1940 with the reaction to the opening of Great Smoky Mountains national park the school and the fraternity build up a new Arrow craft organization to accommodate the work of the more than 90 artisans.
The organization then approached the department of crafts and interior design at the home economics collage which is located at the University of Tennessee so that they could use the Gatlinburg premises so that they could use it to expand the influence about their growing field of crafts. This effort of the organization led to an effective production of their uniquely produced arts and crafts. Right from their first effective effort until today the organization has produced a number of exhibitions which also led to the opening of Gatlinburg Cottage Weaver's Industry
