National Basketry Organization Conference Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN
Known as the main gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains, a one-time remote locale that was called the "land of paradise" was founded two hundred years ago by Martha Jane Huskey Oglae in honor of her deceased husband—now called Gatlinburg, Tennessee, where the National Basketry Organization Conference Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts is held.
An area developed in richness and diversity for its famous oak and willow baskets, Gatlinburg comprises the largest group of artists in North America on an independent basis. Forming the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community in 1937, an 8-mile loop of studios, galleries, and shops were formed to preserve the craft and art heritage of the area. It was out of this atmosphere that the Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts was formed.
The conference Tradition & Innovation: Basketry Today—sponsored by the Handweavers Guild of America—was held at Arrowmont 1999, forming the National Basketry Organization of America. Membership is provided for the NBO, with a conference application fee providing a catalog with every instructor's detailed qualifications, samples of their work, and a highly-detailed description of the class and what it entails/needed supplies.
Every year, over 3000 students head toward Gatlinburg for workshops, media conferences , and the latest seminars through the Arrowhead School of Arts and Crafts for weekend workshops, or longer one of-one-and-two week periods. Not only are basketry classes offered at the school but also a wide range of artistic opportunities, from book arts to weaving, with Arrowmont considered one of the leading influences in art education that is committed to enriching lives through art with their latest workshop with the National Basketry Organization.
