Candlelight Tours at Marble Springs Historic Site in Knoxville, TN
Nestled among the beauty of Tennessee and within the range of both Knoxville and the Smokey Mountains is a living museum; Marble Springs. This site is restored from the time of Tennessee's first governor, John Sevier, which was in the late 1700s. By using careful attention to detail and an intimate knowledge of the period's architecture and building material, Marble Springs is an amazing example of period construction which holds a great historical and cultural importance to the people of Knoxville.
Those visiting Marble Springs do so out of curiosity, respect for the past, or the opportunity to participate in the many workshops available throughout the year.
These workshops are open to the public and can include open hearth cooking, colonial games, and basket weaving. Now, along with these great workshops are events that are held throughout the year. At these events visitors are entertained with reenactments, demonstrations, and much more. During the first part of December on the 6th and 7th is the Candlelight Tours.
The Candlelight Tours begin at 8:00 pm and with the aid of a flickering flame and the glowing stars above guides will take you through Marble Springs. Remember, during the original time period of this location electricity was not yet used as commonly as it is today so candlelight was really the only light source once the sun went down.
During the tour the guides will share stories and anecdote about Marble Springs, John Sevier, and really anything else. After the candlelight tour you are going to come away with a new found appreciation for modern technology and a deep respect for those who lived all those centuries ago.
