Guinness World of Records Museum History
- The idea behind the Guinness Book of World Records came from the managing director of Guinness Brewing in Ireland. He was unable to settle a dispute between friends over what was the fastest game bird in Europe. Sipping a pint he soon realized that countless disagreements over similar questions must be taking place all over the British Isles especially in pubs where Guinness products were sold. Therefore he decided to publish The Guinness Book of World Records in 1955 to help settle some of the arguments. The first American edition was published in 1956. The book quickly became a best seller and holds the all time sales record for a copyrighted book.
- The Guinness World of Records Museum in Gatlinburg first opened its doors in 1978 and is the oldest Guinness museum still in operation. A major renovation was completed in 1994 and annual updates and additions keep the museum current.
Now is your chance to witness the amazing displays and get the chance to surprise your friends with amazing facts when you return home from your vacation in the Smokies!
