Surf Specialties was established in 1985 by surfer James Fulbright.& The business started in his garage where he provided a used board repair service and sold surf accessories. Over the years the 'underground' surf shop became more widely known, and he was successful in leading a team to be five-times winners at the Texas State Surfing Champions. As a result he has seen his business grow and grow.
Fulbright attributes this success to staying loyal to his customers and his 'hardcore' roots by concentrating on giving the serious surfer what they want — a great selection of top brand boards and accessories. He has worked with some of the top board designers around the world and his mentor was designer and developer, Dona Leva, who worked for Freestyle and UL Fin Systems.
Surf Specialties has move on from the garage, and can now be found in a convenient beachfront location on Seawall Boulevard in Galveston. The store has a huge selection of surf equipment. There are up to 90 surfboards in stock at any one time, all the accessories you could possibly need plus men's and women's surf wear. The store stocks CD of popular surf, rap rock and reggae artists as well as surfing DVDs and magazines. The store also has a skateboard section 'build your own surfboard' department and now carries a new range of Felt and Nirve beach cruisers.
Fulbright has recently made an award-winning film documentary 'Miles to Surf' which includes a history of riding waves, interviews with key figures in the surfing world and a look at the latest in specially designed 'wave pools' around the world.
