The Strand Theatre is situated in Galveston's Strand district, opposite the historic Tremont House Hotel. Although productions began in 1977 the theater moved to its current home in 1982. It is housed in the Opperman Building which dates from 1871 and has been the subject of an extensive renovation program. As a result the theater has improved facilities for visitors, including seating for people with disabilities, while retaining its informal and intimate atmosphere. There is a beautiful lobby area and seating in the theater for 200 people. The annual program offers classic and award-winning plays, dance, musicals and classic movie showings and film festivals. It also hosts live music performances. It is a thriving community theater that is popular with locals and visitors to the Island. It works in collaboration with other theater companies such as Nova Arts Project, Mildred's Umbrella, Bobbindoctrin Puppet Theatre, and Melusine.
The theater has facilities for hire including the Red Room that can be rented for parties before and after performances. The room is located on the second floor and looks out over the Mardi Gras Street. The theater can cater for celebrations, film screenings, wedding receptions and corporate events.
Covered parking is available nearby and there are trolley stops in front of the theater. The box office is open daily, and ticket prices are $22.00 for regular admissions and $15 for discounts. Season subscriptions are available - $100 for an Individual Membership which allows 6 admissions to main stage productions. Discounts for groups are available (subject to availability).
