Saltgrass Steak House in Galveston, TX
The Saltgrass Steak House in Galveston in Texas is part of a chain of restaurants that has a long history dating as far back as the mid-1800s. At that time Longhorn cattle roamed freely all throughout the state of Texas. As the consumer taste for beef grew, Texas ranchers made a great deal of money off of these Longhorn.
The Longhorns were well cared. Each winter ranchers drove the cattle to the Texas Gulf Coast where rich coastal saltgrass could be found. The trail the cattle and the ranchers followed became known as the Salt Grass Trail.
The knowledge of the trail faded from history until 1952. During that year it was revived by four riders who used it as a way to publicize the opening of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Since then the ride has become an annual celebration. On this trail stands the first Saltgrass Steak House.
The Saltgrass Steak House in Galveston is like all the other Saltgrass Steakhouses in that it strives to "recapture the flavor of the open campfire." Meats are chargrilled. Desserts (like the Two-Fork Cheesecake), breads (like the Shiner Bock Beer Bread), and soups are made fresh daily.
The restaurant serves only certified Angus beef that is cooked anyway a guest likes it. Steaks are the restaurant's specialty and are seasoned with the Saltgrass 7 Steak Spice and topped with garlic butter.
Most meals come with a selection of sides the restaurant calls Sidewinders. Sidewinders vary and include fries, veggies, an assortment of potatoes, and seasonal vegetables.
A children's menu and full bar are also available at the Galveston location. Guests can also order take-out.
The restaurant is open until 10pm from Sunday through Thursday and until 11 pm on Friday and Saturday.
