The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is based in Durango in south-western Colorado. The company was founded by Frank Crail in 1981 who wanted to raise his family in the town, and was looking for a business opportunity. He hit on the idea of a chocolate shop serving the locals and tourists. The original shop still stands in Main Street, although there is now a large factory on the outskirts of town supplying over 300 locations around the world.
The Factory sells a huge selection of chocolate candy and confectionery products, based on the recipes of its master candy maker. It is known for making over-sized chocolates, although attributed to a mistake in the early days of chocolate making at the factory, these 'mountain-size' pieces have remained a firm favorite. All kinds of clusters, caramels, creams, truffles and shaped chocolates can be found at any one of its stores, and are presented in a variety of decorative boxes and tins. In the Factory shops you can see your old favorites being created - caramel and candy apples (over 30 different varieties) and traditional fudge made fresh everyday. After experiencing the sights and smells from the store kitchen who could resist trying some!
The Factory produces a range of fine chocolates and its signature piece is the 'Bear' - a big paw full of caramel, nuts and chocolate, another favorite is the 'Bucket' - a king-sized peanut butter cup. The Factory has recently been developing sugar-free lines of its chocolate and confectionery range, and caters for special occasions and corporate events.
