Railroad and train fanatics seem, to most people, a special breed. They follow their chosen industry/hobby with a passion unequalled. For many of these railroad lovers, the Galveston Railroad Museum is a preferred destination, a place to spend considerable time with one of the fine collections of railroad-related items in the world.
The facility opened its doors 25 years ago, welcoming more than a million visitors since 1982. The museum exists because the Moody Foundation stepped in during the 1960s to prevent the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railroad buildings from being demolished. Through the years, the museum has collected train engines and other "rolling stock" from several places. One of the more unique collections housed in the Galveston Railroad Museum is the Renfert collection, probably the largest gathering of railroad china in the country.
Board members and management personnel have the vision of telling the complete story of Texas railroads, from the arrival of the first steam locomotive in 1853. To accomplish this mission, the museum is open every day from March through December, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children 4 to 12 years of age. Senior citizens receive a $1 discount. (The museum recently announced it will be closed on Monday in January and February). It is also closed on major holidays.
Galveston Railroad Museum is often the site of special events as well. Visitors are urged to contact the museum before they visit, so as not to miss a special exhibit or activity.
