Galveston Arts Center is situated in a historic building on the corner of the Strand in Galveston. The Center promotes the visual arts by holding rotating exhibitions, and through its extensive outreach program. It supports emerging artists, and presents contemporary art in a historic setting.
The Center has temporary exhibitions featuring art work from a range of contemporary artists including photography, ceramics, mixed media, sculpture and large scale installations. Pieces from both up and coming and established artists from across the state are exhibited.
For over 20 years the Center has runs the Artwalk tour on a Saturday evening. Every six to eight weeks the tour program features exhibitions and art work in other galleries and spaces, for example, restaurants and stores in historic Galveston. This popular event brings artists and their work in contact with people who may not usually visit galleries, giving them a chance to view and appreciate displays in different settings.
The Center has its own store 'ArtWorks' where artists, new and established can display their work for sale. The attractive store stocks ceramics, photographs, pottery, silver jewelry and wood -turned pieces. Works are taken on a commission basis and the proceeds to towards both the artist and funding for the Arts Center.
The Center has an active educational and outreach program including its Art for All project that works with children in hospital or at risk, and senior citizens groups among many others.
Admission to the Arts Center's three galleries and shop are free to visitors. Opening times:Tuesday through Saturday 11.00 am to 5.00 pm, and Sunday 12 noon to 5.00pm. Closed Mondays.
