The town of Franklin is located in Maco County, North Carolina. It's settled in the Smoky Mountains and was founded in 1855. It was named after an 18th century political leader named Jesse Franklin. At one time the Cherokee lived in or around what has now become Franklin. In honor of the Cherokee, many street names in the town have been names to reflect Indian heritage.
In 1890 the town had a small population of fewer than 290 people. It has since grown to have a population of more than 3,600. The town is becoming a retirement place and each summer the population doubles due to all the visitors and tourists.
