The Carl E. Johnson State Recreation Area is comprised of four barrier islands, namely Lovers Key, Inner Key, Long Key and Black Island. Home to a wide array of fish and other aquatic animals which shelter in the canals and the mangrove fringed tidal lagoons, the park provides plenty of alternatives for a quiet getaway from the urban mayhem.
The park is open for visitors from 8 am until sunset, all throughout the year. Here, you can indulge in a number of activities which range from canoeing to fishing in the clear waters of the picturesque Gulf Beach. The Estero Bay shoreline is well-known for its abundant populace of trout, snook and redfish among other varieties. The two mile long white sand beach of the Gulf of Mexico, which is accessible by trams from the parking areas, is a beautiful picnic spot which a beach pavilion and plenty of picnic tables. You can even venture out on the rustic hiking trails to spot osprey fishing in the water or nesting in the trees. You will also find marsh rabbits, raccoons and grey squirrels in their natural homes. Depending on the season you visit the park in, you can spot several shore and wading birds like roseate spoonbills and reddish egrets. Bottlenose dolphins and the endangered West Indian manatee have also been known to inhabit the waters around this region. The park also offers two playgrounds where children can gambol.
