Getting In & Around Fort Myers

For travelers who like a wide variety of activities, Fort Myers provides it all: history, scenery and relaxation. Traveling to, and around, the Fort Myers area is easy, whether visitors come from nearby or from afar. The only difficult task is deciding which Fort Myers attraction to enjoy first!

ARRIVING IN FORT MYERS:

By Plane
Southwest Florida Airport (airport code: RSW) serves the entire Fort Myers area, and has plenty of commercial flights every day. Major airlines include Air Canada, AirTran, America West, American, American Trans Air, Continental, Delta, JetBlue, LTU International, Midwest Express, Northwest/KLM, Royal, Spirit, Sun Country, United and US Airways. Southwest Florida Airport is located on Daniels Parkway, east of Interstate 75. Upon landing, travelers should check the information booths for maps and literature about the area. Ground transportation from the airport includes rental cars, taxis and vans. Rental car agencies include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty.

By Rail and Bus
Amtrak's nearest passenger train station is in Tampa; Amtrak provides bus connections between Tampa and Fort Myers, from the Greyhound/Trailways bus station at 2275 Cleveland Avenue.

By Car
Fort Myers is located 148 miles Northwest of Miami, 142 miles South of Tampa, and 42 miles North of Naples. Interstate 75 and U.S. Highway 41 are the major highways through the Fort Myers area.

GETTING AROUND FORT MYERS:

By Car
Many visitors choose to explore Fort Myers by car, either rental or their own. Rental car rates begin at $36 a day or $216 per week. U.S. Highway 41, also called the Tamiami Trail, takes travelers through downtown Fort Myers, where it turns into Cleveland Avenue. The main street through Fort Myers is McGregor Boulevard (same as Route 867), and leads to Sanibel and Captiva Islands. To get to Fort Myers Beach, visitors should take San Carlos Boulevard from McGregor Boulevard.

Public Transportation
LeeTran operates a public bus system throughout Fort Myers; maps can be picked up at the Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce. Regular adult fares are $1.00, and an all-day fare is $3.00; senior/disabled fare is $0.50.

Additional Information
While in Fort Myers, visitors can stop by the Greater Fort Meyers Chamber of Commerce at Edwards Drive and Lee Street, located on the downtown waterfront. This visitor center is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and provides plenty of free visitor information. A second information kiosk is located at the Edison and Ford Winter Estates.
