The Steele Indian School Park near Flagstaff, AZ, is a park that has been built to honor the memory of the Steele Indian School that used to reside on the property. One three of the school's original buildings remain on the site. Memorial Hall is one building that has been restored. It is a two story building in a Mission Revival style. It was built in 1922 and was used by the school for assemblies, ceremonies and theater. An unusual aspect of the building was the names carved into the bricks outside. Students started doing this in the 1930s and it caught on as a school tradition. The original brick was preserved in the restoration and these names can still be seen. It makes for a popular attraction for former students who come to show where they carved their name so long ago. The restoration tried to preserve as much of the original design and style of the building as possible. Instead of replacing parts of the structure they were restored, such as the maple flooring. The Steele Indian School Park is also home to one of the cities most popular events, the Phoenix Independence Day Celebration. During the celebration the park is crowded with people showing their American pride. Every year the event features entertainment, rides and fireworks, along with a range of great foods. The Steele Indian School Park is a mixture of entertainment, history and the beautiful nature of Arizona which can be enjoyed all year round.
