Montezuma Well near Flagstaff in Arizona, in Camp Verde, is a legendary location throughout this area. It is located on Montezuma Castle Highway and provides a very interesting natural landscape. The well itself was created by underground springs that formed a sinkhole. The surface and soil itself is that of limestone, which is found heavily throughout the region. This gives the soil a red color. Montezuma's Castle was located nearby and at the time the well area prior to falling in was a natural, large sized underground cavern.
Today, Montezuma's Well is a natural well that is surrounded by a variety of Native American cliff dwellings. The location is notorious for new, interesting and unique plant life and animal life. In fact, some of the animal and plant life found here is not known to exist any place else in the world. The well houses a very warm underground spring. Unlike others like it, this spring is a very stable one and this helps to create a very strong habitat within the well.
The well and spring water have been used by those in the region for many years. In fact, many believe that prehistoric farmers would use this well to help water their crops as one of the first signs of farming.
Although you can visit Montezuma's Well, you may want to stop first at the Montezuma's Castle, which offers its own unique stories and history. The well is located just northeast of the castle itself. The terrain is rather rough. The location is open to the public.
