Margaret T. Hance Deck Park is an oasis of green and quiet in the middle of urban Phoenix, Arizona. Officially it is the Margaret T. Hance Park, named after the popular woman who was Phoenix's first female mayor, serving from 1976 to 1984, and who passed away in 1990. It has been called a "deck" park because it is actually built on top of the I-10 Tunnel, which is certainly an innovative use of valuable city space. In fact, it has been called an engineering marvel, set as it is above the busiest freeway between Phoenix and Los Angeles.
This inner-city park has no admission fee. It offers a pleasant grassy area beside a pond for picnics, a playground area for children, and restrooms. There are volley ball pits, and full lighting at night. Visitors can enjoy the Japanese Tea House and the lovely Friendship Garden. This downtown park has been used for a wide variety of social functions including: the Annual Arizona Book Festival, the Arizona Irish Festival, and the Night Walk for the Leukemia and Lymphona Society. There is ample free parking available.
Margaret T. Hance Deck Park is located on a major downtown corridor and so is very easily accessible. Moreover, it is in the city's artistic and cultural area, just south of the Burton Barr Library. In the park you are not far from performing arts theaters, museums, art galleries, fine restaurants and cultural centers. Any of these places that are beyond walking distance are easily reached by public transit.
