Kendrick Peak at San Francisco Volcanic Field in the Coconino Plateau which is located just outside of the city of Flagstaff in Arizona is a unique formation that visitors to enjoy.& Kendrick Peak is about 10,400 feet high above sea level. In all of the mountains within Arizona, this height makes Kendrick Peak about the 11th largest in the state. The mountain itself is about 2.7 to 1.4 million years old. It is made up mostly of dacite and rhyolite flows.
The mountain peak is completely within the Kendrick Mountain Wilderness. The only thing located on the peak itself is the fire lookout that is stationed at the top of the mountain. This fire lookout was first staffed in 1900 and has been maintained during the week by the United States Forest Service and by volunteers on the weekends.
Visitors can reach the summit of Kendrick Peak by taking one of three trails. These too are maintained by the forest service. The trails include: Kendrick Mountain Trail, Bull Basin Trail and Pumpkin Trail. These trails not only will give you an amazing view, but also showcase some of the important elements of the area. For example, traveling up Kendrick Mountain Trail, you will come across a Colorado Pinyon which is still growing at an altitude of 10,400 feet at this point. This is a rare feet for such a species, but others throughout the region are just as unique. As you travel this trail or others, you will notice the damage that was the result of a large wildfire that broke out in 2000. Efforts are underway to help restore the area.
