The Grand Canyon is one of the world's most phenomenal natural sights, and what better way to see it than aboard the Grand Canyon Railway. With its first run taking place in 1901, this railway has plenty of history of its own in addition to the breathtaking scenery of its surroundings. Today the route of the train does not differ from the same trip taken by your grandparents and forefathers.
There are four vintage classes of serve that have been reproduced on board, so not only are you taking a trip to the spectacular Canyon, you are taking a trip back in time. Take you pick from Coach Class, First Class, the Observation Dome or even Parlour Class and enjoy your own private car and access to the open air rear platform.
The unique aspect of this trip is that it was here before all the 4 x 4 tours, helicopter rides, white water rafting and even mule tours, so you really can savour the history. Aside from bringing tourists to the Rim, it was the lifeline for the workers and those few people who lived right near the edge of the park for all these years.
The Railway almost ceased to exist in 1968 when automobile transport had become so popular it was thought that the railway would become defunct, but the company did not give up and it now enjoys a complete rejuvenation. In 1989 the railway was bought by entrepreneurs and new life was breathed back into the old historic train. Now it carries over 200,000 people to the canyon each year.
