Arizona Historical Society Pioneer Museum in Flagstaff, AZ
The Arizona Historical Society Pioneer Museum is located in the Coconino County Hospital building that served as the County Hospital for over 30 years at the start of last century. The building was later bought by the Northern Arizona Pioneers' Historical Society and opened its doors as a museum in 1963. Within the museum grounds there is also the Ben Doney homestead cabin that was moved complete in 1967 from its original location in East Flagstaff and a 1929 Baldwin Articulated Locomotive that has sat grandly in front of the museum since 1994.
The museum is open from 9am until 5pm every day except Sunday and has over 10,000 artifacts and collections that allow visitors to visualize life in historical Flagstaff. You can see medical equipment, toys and children's furniture, authentic costumes and many household items that would have been used by the Pioneers. There are also a number of bigger collections including farm machinery and other contraptions used to make everyday life easier.
As well as these static attractions, the museum also holds a number of annual events which include the Flagstaff Wool Festival in June and the 'Playthings of the Past' exhibit which runs from Thanksgiving through to February and includes a spectacular teddy bear's picnic. There is also the Independence Day festival which brings history to life with camps and demonstrations of woodworking, spinning, cooking and much more. In addition the Ben Doney Cabin houses the craft demonstration centre and different crafts and pastimes are regularly shown here for your enjoyment.
